Note: This post has been updated as of April 2nd, 10:00 p.m. PST. The ROBLOX catalog and currency trading system are back online. A small number (less than 0.01%) of ROBLOX accounts had some transactions rolled back.
We experienced a site issue the evening of April 1st that triggered alerts, and we intentionally took the site offline. Two things happened prior to taking the site offline:
- Several assets were released from our backlog that were not ready for production
- Several accounts were incorrectly granted large amounts of ROBUX; some of these ROBUX were subsequently traded with other accounts
We brought the site back online during the late evening of April 1st after ROBLOX team members patched several issues.
During the day of April 2nd the site ran as normal, but we kept our catalog purchase and currency trading system offline as we audited and rolled back some recent transactions in a small number (fewer than 0.01%) of ROBLOX accounts. In cases where virtual items were traded for ROBUX that had incorrectly entered our system, we undid the trade and returned the virtual item.
Some of the assets that were released will remain in the ROBLOX catalog with updated pricing; however, we will be removing the assets that were not ready for release. In cases where non-production virtual items were unknowingly purchased, we undid the purchase and returned ROBUX to the account.
Today, we have deployed patches, developed tools to increase security and worked on plans to improve our response times. As an aside, ROBLOX uses PayPal for credit card processing, and does not store credit card numbers. If for any reason you feel your account was improperly returned to an earlier state, please contact customer service at info@roblox.com. Thank you very much to the ROBLOX community for all of your tips and suggestions during this busy day.
Chapter 1: The One That Started It All
On April 1st, 2012, a user named Ellernate got in to Roblox’s admin panel by creating an account on SiteTest3 under a Roblox Administrator’s Roblox Username.
For those who don’t know, SiteTest3 is one of the testing sites used by Roblox Corporation to test potential Roblox update. All of these sites as of now are either down or off-limits to visitors.
But back in 2012, there’s were multiple testing sites and one of them is SiteTest3. As the story goes, they way it happened was an oversight with the authentication tokens on roblox test servers.
When you sign in to an account, roblox’s webserver gives your browser a token called .ROBLOSECURITY. This token is then sent whenever you do anything on the website in order to prevent having to send a username and a password over every time your browser sends a request to roblox’s website. If you were to obtain someone else’s .ROBLOSECURITY, you would have full access to their account.
This is pretty standard, and how logins on most websites work.
The way the 2012 breach happened is someone went on the test server and made an account named something like shedletsky, builderman, and some admin’s username. Because not all admins were on the testing sites and their names were never registered. They then took the security token it generated, and tried plopping it in on the normal roblox site.
When they did that, it worked. They were now signed in as an admin and free to cause chaos.
As first, they only used the admin panels to use warning banner.
Multiple banners were added to the top of the site by Ellernate and frequently changed colors and displayed questionable content. Examples include (but were not limited to):
“thank you minish for messing up the economy. nub.”,
“always share your passwords with strangers, kids!”
“Haha these are so funny let’s go spam the forums about them :D”
“Remember kids tell your parents to vote Ron Paul”
“Yo gonna give a shout out to the homies in dah hood”
“Abcedfghikjlmnoqprstuvwzyx”
“OMG like srsly Becky?”
“JOIN BUILDERS CLUB! ITS FREEEEEEEE!!!!”
“Yo RT stop yo ranting homies”
“Playing Roblox is better then going outside!”
“pink. Its my new obsession, pink. it not even aquestion.”
“I’m the annoying orange banner. AHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH. “
“NO TOMATO IS ALWAYS BEST SILLY ORANGE”
“minish is a stupid noob. nah not rly.”
“Do a Barrell Roll”
“jaredvaldez4 best builder on roblox kthxbai”
“minish is climbin in yo windows. snatchin yo people up.”
“these aren’t the droids you’re looking for!”
“Go out and buy some peanut butter yo”
“You put the peanut butter in the potato and stir it all up”
“WHO IS IT? 1x1x1x1,Dignity,Minish,Jared,The Admins? The world may never know :o”
“WII GONNA FIN WII GONNA FIN U”
“You lik these headers? Tell me how you’ve always been such a fan”
“APRIL FEWLS”

“SKRILLEZ BANGARANG WUBWUBWUBWUBWUBWUBWUB”
“Proscribe stop posting your gonna get proscribed BROO”
“Bro chill we get it”
“Yo dog ya’ll need to chill it”
Some of you may think “It’s just a small hack, what’s the big deal about it?” And you are mostly right. Though for it time, this was the most notable hacks that occurs in Roblox’s lifetime, the community in 2012 was small and still growing so it’s quite a big deal back then. Unlike today, most hacks are oftenly got forgotten and it’s can be look passed easily since the community have grown so large.
You also may have seen that I used the word “mostly”, because it’s was just the beginning.
Chapter 2: Chaos and Destruction
Ellernate knew that he can’t wreck havoc alone so he got his 2 friends: Caleb244 and iTrapped.
Caleb244 was responsible for the inappropriate forum post made by staff members. There was an old Pastebin that came out a long time ago that proved Caleb was one of the people who have done this to the admins and posted this all over the Pastebin. He wasn’t banned for hacking the admins and posting inappropriate forum posts but he was banned after he hacked, he got away with it for 1 month until he compromise other big roblox accounts like thegamer101 which roblox noticed and terminated him completely.
The other, iTrapped or more known as Isaac, the creator of BrickPlanet, have done something much more crazy, he was the one responsible for ruining the economy of roblox. He give people tons and tons of robux, he bought a lot of expensive items and sell it for incredibly cheap amount of robux.
The suspected precursor to the event was a forum discussion that deteriorated into an argument between Minish and Merely involving money and the economy of ROBLOX. It is alleged that Minish’s account was taken over by Caleb244, Minish bought Merely’s famous Domino Crown, which was Merely’s personal favorite avatar shop item. The forums soon exploded with threads discussing the events. As a result, the two users were each given bans. This would also lead to Merely briefly quitting ROBLOX.
Soon afterwards, users Pheedy and are17 , both accounts under the control of Ellernate, became moderators and used their elevated privileges to unban Minish. The prices of hats in the avatar shop went down tremendously during this time, and hats were released by the minute for 1 Robux. Some of the names of the hats were changed, such as Explosive Hair being changed to Rocket Hair, Hooded Spacelord to Noob Hood, and Mementero Mori to Candle Skull. This was done by the user iTrapped , or as known as Isaac, the creator of Brick Planet.
Roblox In 2012
It is speculated that 1dev2’s account was one of the accounts that were compromised. Many items were put into his inventory during the event, and his avatar was changed multiple times. His account was subsequently terminated by a moderator. This ban was never revoked, but 1dev2 was possibly allowed temporary access into his account after the event, which during that time, he uncopylocked his game “Welcome to the Town of Robloxia”.
Other accounts affected during this incident include:
Qman1245 obtaining the Dominus Empyreus, Domino Crown, Ban Hammer, and the Admin Badge. His account was later terminated.
Rippinz obtaining multiple items released during the incident, including two copies of the Scary Hood
Misteroe trading away and laundering an estimated 100,000 to 350,000 Robux. There is also some speculation that Misteroe was directly involved with the event.
ExFamous obtaining Dominus Frigidus #16 and #59 Ghostwalker, which were worth approximately eight million Robux at the time.
Mattmlm11 was given the Sinister Fedora along with other items but were later removed from his inventory.

But… It’s won’t last long.
Chapter 3: Taking Desperate Action
After all this activity occurred, Roblox staff brought the site offline and reported that they were attempting to patch up the currency system. The website was brought back online during the late evening of April 1. The site test admin panel was updated and the Roblox avatar shop was offline until the following evening.
In a Roblox Blog post on April 2, it was announced that “(Roblox) experienced a site issue the evening of April 1st..., and (they) took the site offline”. They noted that “Several assets were released from (the avatar shop) backlog that were not ready for production”, and “Several accounts were incorrectly granted large amounts of ROBUX; some of these ROBUX were subsequently traded with other accounts.” Some avatar shop and currency transactions were audited and rollbacked, and they estimated the rollbacks occurred in fever than 0.01% of Roblox accounts. Some items were updated with new pricing, while other items were taken off-sale. The “c:” face was changed to “Dr. Smyth Face” and was temporarily available for purchase.

Chapter 4: The End?
It’s may seem that we have come to an end.
On April 2, 2012, Ellernate was terminated due to gaining access to the Admin Panel. Additionally he was also deleted due to being involved with the incident and for compromising RobloTim, a staff member. Everyone that accessed the panel were also caught and deleted. Ellernate’s alternate account was “builderkid” which was deleted for unknown reasons. When viewing Builderkid’s posts, they show Ellernate talking about the admin panel. Ellernate eventually came back on an alternate account around June 1, 2012 known as “EllernateAlt” The account claimed that he recorded a 30 minute long video about the admin panel as seen here . He also claimed his account was “Poison Banned” now in modern terms IP-Banned. Ellernate eventually helped run an external competitive site known as Brickplanet with iTrapped.
On May 4, 2012, iTrapped was IP banned for great involvement in the hack, compromising famous players at the time such as TheGamer101 and streetx. iTrapped also took place in destroying the website as a whole during the hack. As a result, iTrapped lost over 1,300,000 RAP (at the time) of limited items: Dominus Frigidus (which was eventually taken), Ice Crown, Sparkle Time Fedora and Darkheart. Almost 2 months after the ban, he went on an account soon known as NoDoom around July 29, 2012 on which he made a post claiming to be iTrapped himself.[citation needed] The account was later terminated. He soon went on an account known as G0dfrey around August 2014 but the account was also terminated. He also used the accounts DubstepTheory and DoctorEvidence, but both are terminated.
In May 2012 Caleb244 was terminated for being apart of the April 2012 Incident.
Roblox ended up returned to normal and the rest is history. But it’s seems that some people have questions like, will there be another hack on the site? Probably not. Roblox have not been hacked for more 8 years and likely never will again. Mostly for the reason that Roblox probably hired hackers to try to hack Roblox and then Roblox can patch up method and upgrade the security of the site. So it’s not likely that the site will be hacked again. But… Its not IMPOSSIBLE… No one will ever know what will happen in the future but when it happen, it will be the part of history.
